What are Apprenticeships and Traineeships?

Apprenticeships and traineeships are jobs that combine work and structured training.    Traineeships are usually for a shorter timeframe based on the level of qualification to be achieved.  You have the opportunity to earn while you learn!

Apprenticeships and traineeships are not just for young people, there are many people who enter apprenticeships and traineeships beyond 21 years of age to obtain a qualification or change their career path.

There are more than 480 apprenticeships or traineeships available in WA.

Students in Years 11 and 12 can now begin a training qualification at the same time as completing their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).  Your local GTO can provide more information about School Based Apprenticeships or visit the Department's information page.

All young people in Western Australia in their 16th and 17th year must be doing something - whether they stay at school, pursue further training (TAFE etc) or work.  Apprenticeships & traineeships are great options for young people who do not want to continue to Year 11 and 12.  For more information on the school leaving age in WA visit http://det.wa.edu.au/schoolleavingage/
Apprenticeships and traineeships get your career underway by placing you straight into the workforce.  Traineeships can be a great stepping stone to further vocational or university courses.
